Overview
The Shandur Polo Festival is one of Pakistan's most unique and exciting sporting events, held annually at the world's highest polo ground at Shandur Pass, situated at an elevation of 3,700 meters (12,200 feet) above sea level. This three-day festival features thrilling polo matches between the rival teams of Gilgit and Chitral, continuing a tradition that dates back hundreds of years. Unlike the formal polo played elsewhere, the Shandur tournament follows freestyle rules, making it faster, harder, and more exciting - often described as "polo in its purest form." The festival attracts thousands of spectators from across Pakistan and around the world who camp in the stunning alpine setting. Beyond the polo matches, the event showcases the rich cultural heritage of the northern areas through traditional music, dance performances, and folk festivals. The breathtaking natural setting adds to the allure of the event. Shandur Pass is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, alpine meadows, and pristine lakes, creating a spectacular backdrop for this ancient sport. The journey to Shandur itself is an adventure, taking visitors through some of Pakistan's most beautiful landscapes. For visitors, the Shandur Polo Festival offers a unique opportunity to witness an ancient tradition in one of the world's most spectacular settings while experiencing the hospitality and culture of Pakistan's northern regions.
